Flat Roof Verandah – Pergolas are typically the most economical structure and can be freestanding or attached to an existing structure.

When attached to an existing structure you need to be aware of unexpected issues such as:

  • Clearance: for large/high vehicles like a boat, caravan, 4wd/truck etc
  • Heat: low flat roofs can trap heat in summer
  • Views: if you want uninterrupted views of your garden or property
  • Perception of Space: a low flat roof can create an ‘enclosed’ or ‘cramped’ feeling.
  • Light: a solid low roof can make the area dark so you need to consider combining translucent sheeting with solid sheets.
  • Orientation: does your proposed structure face north, south, east or west? What are the pros and cons of the location with respect to wind, rain, winter sun, shade in summer etc?

Up until about ten years ago the Flat roof Pergola or Veranda was the most common style of pergola. Originally the Flat Roof Pergola was attached to the fascia under the gutter or to the wall with a back channel to support the roof sheets. The introduction of the Hi-Rib Veranda Deck has allowed the fall of flat rooves to be reduce to one degree, thus increasing the maximum height of the Flat Roof Pergola. Hi-Rib is very strong and can clear span up to 3.5m long therefore eliminating the need for internal frame work, giving a clean open look top the underside of the veranda roof.

At Mt Barker Steel we recommend attached flat roof pergolas for homes with eave heights of 2.4 metre or greater to ensure the height of your new veranda is high enough to provide sufficient airflow.  If your eave height is lower than 2.4 metres we recommend incorporating a gable or curve roof section into your flat roof pergola to ensure maximum airflow, increased head room and uninterrupted the view to your garden.

All verandahs come in different sizes and colours from the economical galvanized to powder coated colours to match existing colour schemes.
